Lodge History

William de Irwin Rose Croix is one of the oldest Rose Croix Chapters and was originally formed on the 11thOctober, 1870.The rather unusual name for the Chapter is derived from the ancestral line of the then Capt. Francis George Irvine who was one o f the founder members and the prime influence in establishing the first Masonic Craft Lodge in Weston-super-Mare and then the Rose Croix Chapter which bears his name. The Chapter operated successfully for some 10 years but sadly due to falling numbers and the inability to recruit new members had to close surrendering its Warrant on 11thApril 1985. It was resuscitated on the 21stFebruary, 1920 when it was stated“that the Chapter, under the new Warrant, would go for ward to a successful future.” This proved to be very true and has thrived ever since and to such an extent that in 1993 a second Rose Croix Chapter was established in the town to cope with the ever increasing interest to join the Order.

Interestingly the Chapter will celebrate its Centenary on 21st February 2020 being 100 years after the date of resuscitation as the period it ceased to operate prevented this from taking place in 1970.
